Sponsored by
the Eastern Region of the Environment Agency and Chelmer Marquees,
Chelmsford Angling Association held its annual Open Day on Sunday 21
August in support of National Fishing Week.
The objective
of the event was to provide an opportunity for people of all ages
and backgrounds to have access to expert tuition from professional
coaches and with all equipment provided. There are some four
million anglers in the UK with a similar number expressing an
interest, but unaware of how to access the pastime. National
Fishing Week events around the country and the CAA’s annual Open Day
provided that access.
World darts
Champion Colin Lloyd (pictured left) and former world darts champion Rod Harrington,
both keen anglers, came along to support the event as did over
one-hundred and fifty visitors who were all welcomed to the CAA’s
Boreham Mere fishery; the four NFA angling coaches were kept busy
throughout the day by forty young people who registered to try their
hand at fishing. In keeping with the success of previous events,
everyone caught fish. (Photo by Neil Sellers - National Fishing
Week)
All young
visitors arriving at the event received an Environment Agency or
National Fishing Week goodies bag and anyone registering to have a
go at angling received a free raffle ticket which saw them have a
chance to win angling equipment prizes donated by the Environment
Agency, Shimano, Van den Eynde and Coach Harry Shearman.
National
Fishing Week 2005 is the second of a three-year national sponsorship
arrangement, worth £250,000, with the Royal Bank of Scotland, the
Environment Agency and Sportsmatch.

Colin Lloyd the recently
crowned PDC World Darts No 1 and Rod Harrington the ex world
No1,gave a great boost to the successful Chelmsford Anglers
Association, National Fishing Week event on Sunday the 21st August.
Both Colin and Rod are keen anglers, with many years experience
between them. Colin recently took part in the ‘Celebrity Fish
O’Mania’ event and won it!!!!!! Trevor Wilson the organiser of the
event was delighted that they could come along, Trevor told National
Fishing Week, 'to receive the support of such high profile
international stars is hugely beneficial in raising the profile of
angling to the outside world.
Colin and Rod have spent time with
many of our visitors to discuss their angling experiences, as well
as signing autographs and having their pictures taken'.
Colin a
supporter of National Fishing Week made the following reference, '
fishing got me out and about as a kid. My friends and I used to go
all over Essex looking for the best waters.
With the many indoor
distractions young people have today, I would urge them to put down
the play station controls for a day, go to the local tackle shop and
enquire as to where you could go fishing'. The event was a great
success with people of all ages coming along to try their hands.
